What the price tag covers

A delivery menu price is not the final charge. Four items get added at checkout: state excise tax, state and local sales tax, a delivery fee, and a tip. California charges a 15 percent excise tax. Oregon charges 17 percent at retail. Nevada adds a 10 percent retail excise tax on top of a wholesale tax. A $40 eighth in Los Angeles can reach $55 after tax and a $5 delivery fee.

Check the store before you pay

  1. License number. State regulators publish a searchable list. California uses the DCC lookup. Oregon uses OLCC. A shop that is not on the list is not legal.
  2. Delivery window. Shops give a 2 to 4 hour range. Ask for a text alert.
  3. ID. A state ID, driver license, or passport. An expired ID fails. Medical patients need a current recommendation.
  4. Purchase limit. Most states cap one customer at 1 ounce of flower per day. Some allow 8 grams of concentrate or 800 mg of THC in edibles.
  5. Payment. Federal law blocks card networks for most cannabis sales. Cash is common. Cashless ATMs add a $2 to $5 fee.

Pitfalls

  • Prices far below the local market. A $15 eighth in a $45 market is a red flag.
  • No lab result or batch number on the label. California, Colorado, and Nevada require testing for potency and pesticides.
  • "Ships to any state" claims. Interstate cannabis transport is a federal crime. USPS bans cannabis in the mail.
  • Delivery to a hotel, a car, or public property. Most states require a private residence with a physical address.
  • Unlicensed sellers on social media. Cash apps offer no refund and no lab data.

Four questions to ask on the phone

Ask for the out-the-door price, the delivery fee, the order minimum, and the arrival window. Out-the-door price includes all taxes. Write the number down before you confirm. Prices shift by city, by harvest, and by product type, so a quote from last month may not hold.
