Terpenes are the aromatic oils a cannabis plant makes, and they work on two levels. First, they are volatile. Cannabis builds terpenes inside glandular trichomes, the tiny crystal heads on the flower. The plant makes precursor molecules through two routes, the mevalonate pathway in the cytosol and the MEP pathway in the plastids. Enzymes called terpene synthases then fold those precursors into monoterpenes like limonene and pinene, or sesquiterpenes like beta-caryophyllene. Genetics set the ceiling. Grow conditions, harvest timing, drying, and curing decide how much of that ceiling you actually get.

Temperature decides what you get

Every terpene has a boiling point, and that number matters more than most labels admit. Myrcene vaporizes around 330 F. Limonene sits a bit higher, near 350 F. Linalool goes higher still. Beta-caryophyllene shows up lower, which is one reason heavy, peppery notes survive a hotter hit. Vape low and you pull the lighter, brighter compounds first. What they do in the body

Beta-caryophyllene is the odd one out. It binds CB2 receptors, which makes it the only common cannabis terpene that behaves like a cannabinoid. Most others work sideways. Linalool and limonene show activity at TRP channels, and linalool has been studied for its effect on GABA-A signaling. Pinene, humulene, and terpinolene all have their own profiles, and none of them are fully mapped out in humans yet.

That gap is where the entourage effect lives. The idea is simple: the whole terpene and cannabinoid profile does something the isolated pieces do not. It is a reasonable theory and a popular sales pitch. Human trials are still thin, so treat confident claims with some patience.

Terpene percentages on a certificate of analysis (COA) usually tell you more about smell than the THC number does. A flower at 22% THC with 2% total terpenes will often smell and taste better than one at 28% with 0.6%. Ask for the COA, then read the individual terpenes, not just the total.

  • Check harvest and packaging dates. Terpenes fade with time, light, and heat.
  • Look at the top three terpenes listed. That combination predicts the aroma better than the strain name does.
  • Ask how the flower was stored. A jar that gets opened all day loses its smell fast.
  • Smell before you buy if the shop allows it. Your nose is a decent terpene test.
  • Compare batches of the same strain. Two harvests can smell nothing alike.
