An MMJ card from an online appointment is legal in states that permit telemedicine for cannabis certification. The rule comes from state law, not federal law. Cannabis remains Schedule I under the Controlled Substances Act. A state card does not change federal status.
No site can sell a valid card without a licensed provider review in a state that requires one. If a site promises a card with no exam and no state registration, the card is not valid.
Check your state first
38 states and the District of Columbia run medical cannabis programs. Each one sets its own qualifying condition list, fees, and renewal dates.
- Telemedicine allowed: Florida, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, New York, and California are examples. Confirm with your state health department.
- In-person exam required: some states require the provider visit in a clinic.
- No medical program: Idaho, Kansas, and Wyoming are examples. A card from another state does not apply.

Costs and timing
Provider fees run $75 to $250. State fees run $25 to $200. Some states cut or waive fees for veterans and low-income patients. Wait times range from same-day approval to 30 days. Cards last one year in most states. Renewal uses the same steps, often with a shorter visit.

What happens at the store
Dispensaries check your card and a photo ID at the door. Some states let staff verify the card number against a state registry. Dispensary employees cannot issue, renew, or certify a card. Bring cash or a debit card. Many shops do not take credit cards because of federal banking rules. Your card carries an expiration date. A sale past that date is not allowed.
