A clogged cannabis cartridge has oil in the center airway tube. The oil cools, thickens, and blocks the path between the coil and the mouthpiece. Heat and airflow clear it. A pull that gives no vapor, a hard draw, or vapor that stops mid-puff points to a clog.

Causes

  • Cool oil. Distillate and live resin thicken below 70 degrees F.
  • Low battery voltage. A weak battery heats the coil but leaves oil in the tube.
  • Hard draws. Strong suction pulls oil up the tube instead of vapor.
  • Sideways storage. Oil drains into the airway overnight.
  • Residue. Repeated use leaves a film that narrows the tube.

Steps to clear it

  1. Set the battery to preheat. Most 510 batteries run a 10 second preheat cycle at 2.0 to 2.5 volts.
  2. Take two short draws after preheat. Stop if the mouthpiece stays blocked.
  3. Warm the cartridge. A hair dryer on low for 15 to 20 seconds, held 4 to 6 inches away, thins the oil.
  4. Roll the cartridge between your palms for 30 seconds. Body heat moves oil back toward the coil.
  5. Insert a paperclip or toothpick into the mouthpiece. Push in 1 to 2 millimeters. Do not force it. Remove the plug of oil.
  6. Pull air through with the battery off. Airflow should feel open.

What not to do

  • Do not hold a lighter or torch to the glass. Heat cracks the tank and burns the oil.
  • Do not blow into the mouthpiece. Moisture carries bacteria into the oil.
  • Do not take apart a press-fit cartridge. The coil wires break and the cartridge leaks.
  • Do not microwave or boil the cartridge.
  • Do not draw hard. Suction pulls more oil into the tube.

Prevention

Store the cartridge upright at 68 to 77 degrees F. Cap the mouthpiece when the cartridge is not in use. Keep the voltage between 2.5 and 3.5 volts. Take draws of 3 to 4 seconds with a 30 second pause between them. A cartridge stored in a hot car clogs again within hours.

When to replace

Replace the cartridge if the mouthpiece stays blocked after two heat cycles, if oil leaks from the bottom threads, or if the vapor tastes burnt. A coil that has run dry has no fix. Cartridges hold 0.5 to 1 gram of oil. A clog that returns three times points to a hardware defect, not the oil.
