What to Expect at a Dispensary
When you walk into a licensed dispensary near you, plan to show a valid ID at the door, wait in a waiting room or lobby, then consult with a budtender before you buy. You will choose from a displayed menu of lab-tested products, pay at a register, and leave with your purchase in child-resistant packaging. The entire visit usually takes 10 to 15 minutes.
1. Security Check and ID Verification
Most dispensaries have a security vestibule or reception window. A staff member will ask to see your government-issued ID to confirm you are 21 or older for adult use, or that you hold a valid medical cannabis card in states that allow medical-only sales.
2. Waiting Area and Menu Display
After check-in, you may be asked to sit in a waiting area. While you wait, review the digital or printed menu on display. Menus list strain names, product types, THC and CBD potency, price per gram, and often lab test results.
3. One-on-One Budtender Consultation
A budtender will call you when a sales station opens. Tell them what you want to treat or how you want to feel. If it is your first time, say so. The budtender will recommend strain types, product formats, and doses based on your experience level.
4. Product Selection
Products fall into several categories:
- Flower: dried cannabis buds you can smoke or vaporize
- Vape cartridges and pre-rolls: convenient ready-to-use options
- Edibles: gummies, chocolates, or drinks that take 30 to 60 minutes to kick in
- Tinctures and oils: drops under the tongue for precise dosing
- Topicals: creams and balms for localized relief
5. Payment and Purchase
Many dispensaries operate as cash-only businesses because federal banking rules limit credit card processing. Bring cash or use the on-site ATM if needed. Some locations accept debit cards through a cashless ATM system. You will receive a receipt and a labeled, child-resistant bag.
6. Legal Possession Limits
Each state sets its own legal purchase and possession limits. In most adult-use states, you can buy up to one ounce of flower or an equivalent amount of concentrate or edibles per transaction. Verify your state's limit before you go so you know how much you can legally leave with.
7. Dispensary Etiquette
- Leave pets outside unless the store is certified as pet-friendly.
- Turn off your phone during the checkout line.
- Avoid bringing a large group, as many stores allow one customer at a time.
- Do not open products inside the store.
- Ask questions if a product is unclear.
