What "delta" means on a dispensary label
Delta refers to the position of a chemical bond in the THC molecule. Delta-9 THC is the primary intoxicating compound found in cannabis flower and most dispensary products. Delta-8 THC is a closely related compound, usually produced from hemp-derived CBD, that produces milder intoxicating effects. When a label or a budtender says "delta," ask which one they mean, because the two carry different dosing, testing, and legal rules.

Delta-9 vs. delta-8 at a glance
- Delta-9 THC: the standard dispensary product. Sold as flower, vapes, edibles, and tinctures under state cannabis programs.
- Delta-8 THC: sold mostly in smoke shops and online, often without state cannabis testing. Fewer dispensaries stock it.
- Potency: delta-9 hits harder per milligram. Delta-8 feels lighter and shorter for most people.
How to shop for delta products
- Show your photo ID at the door and again at the register.
- Tell the budtender this is your first visit and that you want to compare delta options.
- Ask which delta compounds the store carries and who manufactures each item.
- Read the batch label for THC percentage, total milligrams, batch number, and a testing lab name.
- Choose a low starting dose, such as 2.5 mg to 5 mg of delta-9 THC or a quarter of a 10 mg delta-8 gummy.
- Pay, and keep the receipt along with the package for batch reference.
- Wait at least two hours before taking more, especially with edibles.
Reading the label
A tested product lists cannabinoid content per serving and per package, not just per gram. Check whether the label says delta-8 THC, delta-9 THC, or both, and look for a QR code that leads to a certificate of analysis. Products without that paperwork are not verified for potency or contaminants.
Effects and timing
Inhaled delta products act within minutes. Edibles of either compound can take 30 minutes to two hours to peak, which is why a second serving taken too early is the most common mistake first-time visitors make. Delta-8 and delta-9 can both cause dry mouth, red eyes, racing pulse, and anxiety at high doses. Impairment lasts several hours, so plan a ride home.
Legal status
State-licensed delta-9 sales are regulated, tested, and age-gated. Delta-8 sits in a shifting federal and state landscape: the FDA has not approved any delta-8 product for medical use and has warned about synthesis byproducts, while several states have banned it outright. Check your state's rules before you buy, and do not carry delta products across state lines.
