Why Smalls Cost Less
Buyers pick by sight. Large buds sell at a premium. Shops price smalls lower to move volume. A 3.5 gram jar of smalls runs $15 to $30 in most US markets. The same weight in full-size buds runs $35 to $60. That gap is 40 to 60 percent.
Check These Before You Pay
- Weight: 3.5 g is an eighth. 7 g is a quarter. 28 g is an ounce. Read the net weight on the label.
- Package date: look for a harvest or package date within the last 2 to 3 months. THC drops over time. Terpenes fade faster.
- Moisture: press a bud. It should bend and spring back. Dry bud crumbles to powder and smokes harsh.
- Trim: sugar leaves left on a bud add weight and add harsh smoke. A clean trim has few leaves.
- Stems and seeds: smalls carry more stem by weight. Ask the budtender to open the jar. Count seeds in the top layer.
- Batch test: ask for the certificate of analysis. Match the batch number on the label to the batch number on the test report.
- Mold: gray or white fuzz, a musty smell, or brown patches mean walk away.
Parameters to Compare
- THC: 15 to 20 percent covers most smalls lots. Test results track the batch, not the bud size.
- Terpenes: ask for total terpene percent. Above 2 percent is a good sign.
- Price per gram: divide the jar price by the net weight. $20 for 3.5 g is $5.71 per gram.
- Taxes: excise tax plus sales tax adds 25 to 35 percent at checkout in California and other states. Delivery fees add $5 to $10.
- Purchase limits: most states cap a single transaction. Check your state limit before you order a large jar.
Pitfalls
- Shake sold as smalls. Shake is trim, leaf, and loose kief. It is not bud. Ask to see the jar.
- Old stock marked down. A 2023 package date at a 2025 price is not a deal.
- A THC label from a different batch. The label must match the batch number on the package.
- Pre-roll claims. A pre-roll hides the material inside. Buy flower if you want to inspect it.
- Cash-only counters with no receipt. Licensed shops print a receipt with the batch number.
How to Search Near You
Open a dispensary menu and filter by flower. Sort by price per gram, not by jar price. Call ahead and ask three questions: net weight, package date, and total terpenes. A shop that answers all three is worth the trip.
