Cannabis odor comes from volatile terpenes and other aromatic compounds that evaporate from the plant material. In a thin plastic bag or basic clamshell, those compounds pass through the plastic itself and leak around a loose closure. A good container closes both paths.

The body has to be a material with low permeability: glass, coated Mylar foil, or thick ABS or HDPE plastic. The closure needs a compressible seal, usually silicone or rubber, that compresses into a continuous ring when you shut it.   • Note how long you plan to keep the flower, from days to months.

Choosing a Container in Three Steps

  1. Match the size to your purchase. A quarter ounce of flower fits in a 4-ounce jar, while a full ounce needs 8 to 16 ounces of volume with a little headroom.
  2. Check the closure. Press or twist it shut and confirm you feel the gasket compress all the way around the rim.
  3. Confirm child-resistant status if you live with children or pets, or plan to transfer the flower into a certified child-resistant container you already own.

Using a Smell Proof Container

  1. Move the flower into the container and keep the dispensary label with it, including strain name, THC content, and purchase date.
  2. Wipe the gasket and rim dry before closing so moisture does not degrade the seal.
  3. Store the container upright, closed, in a dark spot between 60 and 70 degrees F.
