Powdery mildew on cannabis does not go away. You can knock it back, keep it from wrecking a crop, and stop it before it starts next run. What you cannot do is spray one bottle and get a clean plant back. The white fuzz you see sits on top of a fungus that has already pushed feeding structures into the leaf tissue, so anything you apply only touches the outside. The honest answer to "how do I treat it" is: strip the infected material, change the conditions that let it spread, then spray on a schedule as prevention rather than as rescue.

What you are actually fighting

The powdery mildew on cannabis in most grow rooms is a Golovinomyces or Podosphaera species. These are obligate biotrophs, which means they need living cannabis tissue to survive. They cannot sit in your soil, on your trays, or in dead leaf litter for long. That is good news, because a hard reset of the room plus fresh genetics solves most repeat problems. It is also bad news, because once a plant is colonized, every leaf is a possible reservoir.

Powdery mildew does not need standing water the way bud rot does. It wants high humidity in still air, moderate temperatures, and a dense canopy where leaves sit in a humid boundary layer for hours. Free water on the leaf surface can actually inhibit spore germination, which is the opposite of what most growers assume. Airflow and canopy management move the needle more than any spray.

Products with a real track record

Nothing here is a cure, and rotating between them matters because fungi build tolerance to single-site products.

  • Potassium bicarbonate. Contact action that raises leaf surface pH and disrupts the fungus. Cheap, safe, and effective when coverage is complete, meaning both sides of every leaf and the stems.
  • Horticultural oils and neem. They smother and disrupt the colony. Do not use them in flower if you care about aroma and flavor.
  • Sulfur. Still one of the strongest tools, but check your label carefully. It has temperature limits and cannot be tank-mixed with oil or applied within a set window of an oil spray, or you risk burning plants.
  • Biofungicides. Strains of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens and Bacillus subtilis colonize the leaf surface and trigger the plant's own defenses. They work best before you see symptoms, not after.
  • Hydrogen peroxide. A useful knock-down for visible fuzz. It has little residual activity, so it is a cleanup step, not a plan.

Home remedies like diluted milk have shown results on other crops in university trials, but the data on cannabis is thin, and milk residue on flower is a bad idea.

Anything you spray in flower costs you

Once buds are forming, your options shrink fast. Many cultivators in legal markets ask the blunt question first: is this plant worth the risk of a failed pesticide residue test or a moldy, off-smelling harvest? In most commercial settings, a plant with visible PM at week five of flower gets culled, not treated. Home growers have more latitude, but the tradeoff is the same. Spraying oil or sulfur late in flower leaves residue and taste you will notice.

The middle path is aggressive defoliation of infected leaves, closer airflow, lower humidity, and a biological product that is labeled for use through harvest. Accept that you are buying yield and quality, not erasing the disease.

Prevention is the treatment that actually works

  • Hold humidity in the 45 to 55 percent range in late flower and keep air moving across and through the canopy.
  • Defoliate the lower third before flip and strip leaves that block airflow between colas.
  • Filter your intake. Spores ride in on dust, clothing, and clones.
  • Quarantine any new clone or seed start for two weeks in a separate space.
  • Clean tools, pots, and trays between runs. Spores do not survive well on hard surfaces, so a thorough scrub genuinely helps.
  • Run a weekly preventive spray from early veg through week two of flower, not after you spot trouble.

A simple weekly routine

I scout the undersides of leaves once a week with a flashlight and check the tightest spots in the canopy first, since that is where trouble starts. If the room is clean, I rotate between a bicarbonate spray and a Bacillus product and stop both when flower set begins. If I find a spot, that plant leaves the room the same day, and I treat the neighbors as if they were already exposed. That approach is less exciting than a miracle spray, but it is the one that holds up over multiple harvests.
