What kief is, and what it is not
Trichomes are the sticky glands on the flower. When they dry and fall off, you get kief, sometimes sold as pollen or dry sift. It looks like fine sand or flour and it sticks to fingers, papers, and grinders. Since the plant's cannabinoids and terpenes sit in those glands, kief tests higher than the flower it came from. In a store you will find it in small jars, sold by weight, often one gram at a time.

Kief is not hash. Hash is kief pressed with heat and pressure into a solid block. It is also not bubble hash or rosin, which use water or heat to extract. If a label says kief, expect loose powder.
How much to add
Start around one part kief to five parts flower. In practice that is a thin dusting across a bowl or a narrow line down the center of a joint. Kief often lands between 40 and 60 percent THC, while flower usually sits between 15 and 25 percent. That is a big jump, not a small one. If your tolerance is low, use half of what you planned and wait.

The sandwich method works best. Lay down flower, add a thin line of kief down the middle, then cover it with more flower. Kief pressed against the outside of the paper burns off in the first few pulls and wastes the good part. Roll it slightly looser than a plain flower joint, because kief melts and resists airflow when it is tight. Expect a slower burn, more resin at the tip, and a joint that goes out more often than you are used to.
Kief in a bowl
A bowl is more forgiving. Sprinkle kief on top of ground flower and take a gentle first pull, or layer it in the middle so the flower above it acts as a filter. Use a screen if your pipe has a wide hole, since kief pulls through into the stem. Kief burns hot, so corner the bowl rather than torching the whole surface. The ash will be finer and darker than flower ash. If the first hits taste sharp or ashy, you used too much or held the flame too close.
What to expect at the store
Kief usually sits near the pre-rolls and concentrates, not the flower wall. Ask the budtender three things: the THC percentage, the strain it was sifted from, and how long it has been on the shelf. Kief degrades faster than flower because so much surface area meets the air, so a fresh jar matters. Some shops sell kief-infused pre-rolls, which are convenient but often carry a modest amount. If you want control over the ratio, buy plain kief and add it yourself.
Storage and a few cautions
- Keep it in a small sealed glass jar, out of light and heat.
- Do not press it between your fingers. You will turn it into a sticky smear and lose most of it.
- Go slow. Kief comes on fast, so give it ten or fifteen minutes before adding more.
- If you are new to cannabis, skip the kief and start with flower.
