The short answer

Keep the drying space at about 60 percent relative humidity, plus or minus 5 points, and hold the air between 60 and 70°F. Plan on 10 to 14 days before branches snap instead of bending. After that, buds move into jars and cure at 58 to 62 percent humidity, which is also the range you want your flower stored in at home.

That 60/60 target is not a rule someone invented for the internet. It is the point where stems and buds dry at roughly the same rate, so the outside does not seal over while the core stays wet.

Why 60 percent is the working number

Flower dries from the outside in. Moisture has to travel out of the center of the bud, through the outer tissue, and into the air. If the room sits below 50 percent humidity, that outer layer loses water fast and firms up before the inside has given up much. The result is flower that feels crisp on day five but stays damp in the middle, and damp middles are where mold gets a foothold.

Go the other way and it fails too. Above 70 percent RH, evaporation slows to a crawl. Wet material sitting in warm, stagnant air is the classic setup for Botrytis, the gray fuzz that can appear overnight on a dense cola. Commercial producers treat humidity control as the single biggest lever they have over whether a crop is sellable.

Temperature and air movement

Humidity gets the attention, but it works alongside temperature and airflow.

  • Temperature: 60 to 70°F. Cooler slows the process and risks condensation when air warms. Hotter drives off terpenes, the aromatic compounds that give each cultivar its smell, and pushes drying too fast.
  • Airflow: Gentle and indirect. Point fans at walls or use a low oscillating fan well away from the plants. Direct wind on buds dries the outer surface and creates that wet-core problem.
  • Light: Dark or dim. Light degrades both THC and terpenes over the days the material hangs.

Signs you are on track

You do not need a lab to tell whether the room is behaving. Watch for these.

  • Stems on medium branches bend, then break with a clean snap somewhere around day 10 to 14.
  • Bud squeezed in your fingers feels spongy and springs back. It should not powder, and it should not feel cool and damp.
  • A sample bud sealed in a jar overnight pushes the jar humidity to 58 to 62 percent. Above 65, it goes back for more drying time.
  • The smell reads like the plant, not hay. A hay or grass note usually tracks with drying that ran too fast or too hot.

Drying too fast

Buds crumble, stems brittle on day six, smell flat and grassy. Terpenes left with the moisture. There is no way to put them back. You can slow the next run by lowering the dry air and raising humidity toward 60 percent.

Drying too slow

Outer buds stay soft, stems never snap, a musty edge creeps into the smell. Raise airflow, drop humidity toward 55 percent, and consider trimming colas into smaller pieces so air can reach the interior.

What this means when you buy flower

Drying is the part of the process you never see as a shopper, but you can read it in the jar. A batch dried at the right humidity feels springy rather than dusty, holds a rounded smell, and keeps it after the container is closed for a while. Flower that crumbles to dust in your fingers was pulled from the room too early or left too long, and the flavor is gone with the water. Flower that feels damp, clumps together, or smells like a basement was taken down before it was ready.

Ask the staff two questions. First, is there a harvest or packaging date on the label? Second, does the shop store open jars with humidity packs around 58 to 62 percent? A store that tracks those numbers usually knows what happened in the drying room too. Slightly dry flower can sometimes be revived with a humidity pack over a day or two. Past a point, no pack brings back terpenes that already evaporated.
