What is in the oil

Distillate is refined THC. Potency runs from 70% to 95% THC by weight. Live resin and rosin keep more of the plant's native compounds. Potency for those lands near 60% to 85%. The rest of the oil is terpenes, minor cannabinoids such as CBD and CBG, and carrier compounds.

Terpenes and flavorings

Terpenes carry smell and taste. Labels list them by name: myrcene, limonene, pinene, linalool, caryophyllene. Terpene content sits near 1% to 5% of oil weight. Some products reach 10%. Botanical terpenes come from other plants. Cannabis-derived terpenes come from cannabis. Food-grade flavoring appears in fruit and dessert SKUs.

Additives and diluents

Older vape carts used propylene glycol, polyethylene glycol, and vegetable glycerin to thin the oil. Many state regulators now bar those in inhalable cannabis. MCT oil appears in some products and is restricted in several states. Vitamin E acetate is banned in most legal markets. The CDC found vitamin E acetate in 51 of 51 bronchoalveolar lavage samples from patients in the 2019 lung injury outbreak. That outbreak produced 2,807 hospitalizations and 68 deaths.

Hardware

The coil and wick touch the oil and the vapor. Cotton wicks and ceramic coils are the two common builds. Metal parts can shed lead, cadmium, chromium, and nickel. Some states test the aerosol for metals. Most states test the oil, not the vapor.

What labs test for

  • Cannabinoids: HPLC. Reports THC, THCA, CBD, CBDA, CBG, CBN.
  • Terpenes: GC-MS or GC-FID. Reports each terpene in mg/g.
  • Pesticides: LC-MS/MS and GC-MS/MS. Panels run from 60 to more than 100 analytes.
  • Residual solvents: headspace GC-MS. Reports butane, propane, hexane, ethanol in ppm.
  • Heavy metals: ICP-MS. Reports lead, cadmium, arsenic, mercury in µg/g.
  • Microbials: total aerobic count, yeast and mold, E. coli, Salmonella, plus Aspergillus in some states.
  • Mycotoxins: aflatoxins and ochratoxin A.
  • Vitamin E acetate: required in some states, banned in others.

Reading a COA

Ask for the COA by batch number. Check the test date. Oil and flower shift over months. Check the lab name and its license. Check that the sample name and weight match the package. Look for pass and action limit columns. A blank field is not a pass. It means the lab did not run that test. State limits differ, and they change year to year. Labels list total THC, often with a 10% variance allowance.
