Cannabis cleaning solution is a solvent that breaks down resin left in glass pipes, bongs, vape hardware, and grinders. Water alone does not work. THC resin is oil-based, so it needs alcohol, oil, or a detergent to lift from a surface.
Which Solvent Works
Isopropyl alcohol is the common choice. A 91 percent concentration removes most residue. A 99 percent product cuts through thick buildup. A 70 percent product holds more water and needs a longer soak.
Isopropyl Alcohol and Salt Method
Steps
- Pour 2 to 4 ounces of isopropyl alcohol into the piece. Add 1 teaspoon of coarse salt.
- Cover every opening. Shake for 30 to 60 seconds.
- Let the piece sit for 15 minutes. Baked-on residue may need 30 minutes.
- Rinse with warm water for 2 minutes. Repeat if residue remains.
Salt does not dissolve. The grains act as an abrasive and scrape softened resin from the glass wall.
Other Options
- Ethanol cleaners. Grain alcohol is a solvent and food-safe. Cost per ounce is higher than isopropyl alcohol.
- Citrus terpene cleaners. d-limonene dissolves resin. These products leave an oil film and need a soap wash after use.
- Powdered cleaners. Some formulas use sodium percarbonate. Soak time runs from 4 to 12 hours.
- Dish soap and hot water. This works on light residue. It does not remove carbon.

A dispensary or head shop stocks bottles of isopropyl alcohol, branded glass cleaners, cleaning caps, brushes, and pipe kits. Staff can match a cleaner to a device. Vaporizers with plastic parts can crack in high-strength alcohol. Silicone pieces tolerate alcohol but hold odor.
Safety Notes
Isopropyl alcohol is flammable. Keep the piece away from a lighter, a pilot light, or an open flame during the soak. The vapor is heavier than air and can pool near a counter.
Do not mix cleaners. Bleach and ammonia form toxic gas. Alcohol and bleach form chloroform.
