Federal law bans interstate shipment of cannabis. Every jar in a licensed US store holds flower grown inside that state. An exotic label does not mean imported flower.
Price Tiers in US Markets
An eighth ounce is 3.5 grams.
- Value tier: $18 to $30 per eighth. Machine trim, older batches, 15% to 22% total THC.
- Mid tier: $30 to $45. Hand trim, 20% to 26% total THC.
- Premium or exotic tier: $45 to $75. Small-batch grows, named cultivars, terpene panels, 22% to 30% total THC.
Illinois runs higher than Oregon and California. License limits and excise tax push eighths to $55 to $80 before sales tax.

Do the Math
Cost per milligram of THC decides value. Two examples, both at the same store.
- $35 eighth at 20% total THC: 700 mg of THC. Cost: 5 cents per mg.
- $60 eighth at 25% total THC: 875 mg of THC. Cost: 6.9 cents per mg.
The premium jar costs 38% more per milligram. It also holds 175 mg more THC in the same weight. You pay for those extra milligrams. The jar is not a bargain.
Advice First: Five Checks
- Ask for the batch certificate of analysis. Look for total THC, total terpenes, pesticides, microbials, heavy metals.
- Read the harvest date and the packaging date. Terpenes fade. Flower packaged 8 months ago smells flat next to flower packaged last month.
- Get the price per gram before tax. State and local tax adds 10% to 37%, based on state.
- Buy one gram or one pre-roll first. Then commit to an eighth or an ounce (28 g).
- Compare two tiers from one grower. Same genetics at two prices shows what trim and cure are worth.
Pitfalls
- THC percentage as a quality signal. Federal data show average flower potency rose from about 4% in 1995 to about 15% in 2019. Labels above 30% exist. Labs use different methods, so a 2 point gap between two brands carries little weight.
- Rare names. Cultivar names are not trademarked in most states. Two growers can sell different genetics under one name.
- Tax tiers. Illinois charges 10% excise tax on flower at or below 35% THC and 20% above. Most flower sits below the line, so the tier has little effect on the bill.
- Storage. Flower dries out in 3 to 6 months without a humidity pack. A 62% relative humidity pack slows the loss.
- Register shock. The shelf price is not the final price.
When the Premium Is Worth It
Pay the premium when the batch has a fresh cure date, a published terpene panel, and a cultivar you cannot find in the mid tier. A $10 to $20 gap on an eighth holds up under those terms.
Skip it when the only difference is the word exotic on the label. Skip it when the certificate of analysis is older than the packaging date, or when the staff cannot name the farm.
